Norfolk Island pine kept for nesting osprey

A diseased Norfolk Island pine will be retained after the local Grow Urban Shade Trees group discovered an osprey nesting at the top of it.

This tree will now be kept until the osprey has moved on.

"This is a small but important win when a tree has to be felled," said group member Ms Jen Wilder.

"This seemed like an excellent opportunity to remind residents to please hire qualified, competent and ethical arborists when requiring tree pruning or removals.

"Too often we are seeing unqualified contractors undertaking work or a lack of transparency in Arborist Reports from council.

"It is up to us as a community to protect our remaining, rare canopy cover and the wildlife that inhabit it.

"Ensure you ask the arborist you contract to check for wildlife.

"Ensure you ask them what their qualifications are and their attitude towards the environment.

"Employing a consulting arborist to undertake a five-yearly health check on any large trees on your block is a great way to gain some peace of mind while also addressing any issues as they arise.

"Some trees can simply be 'stagged', removing limbs and retaining the trunk, where it may be providing habitat," said Ms Wilder.

"As always, if you are concerned or uncertain about tree works occurring in the neighbourhood, we encourage you to call and email Council.

"If you suspect illegal works are taking place, please take photos of licence plates and the works occurring so that appropriate action can be taken by Council."
