Patonga Dr oil spill cleaned up

Pearl Beach, Patonga and The Bays Rural Fire Brigades cleaned up an oil spill that stretched the length of Patonga Dr between Patonga to Umina last Tuesday.

Crews attended the incident, identifying dangerous areas, and applying absorbent material where possible.

Firefighters left the scene, having cleaned up as much oil as possible.

However, they warned that the road surface was still more slippery than normal.

"Road users are reminded to continue to exercise caution when travelling along Patonga Drive, especially when approaching descents and corners," said Pearl Beach brigade captain Mr Lindsay Boyd.

"Patonga Drive can be a dangerous road under the best of conditions, under wet conditions it can be risky, and with the addition of oil it can be very dangerous.

"Drive at a safe speed - not at the speed limit, brake and accelerate slowly and smoothly to try and maintain traction and control, and leave a larger space between vehicles."
