Umina crews finish strongly in first round of competition
Two crews from Umina Surf Life Saving Club have finished strongly in the first round of Central Coast and Hunter boat series held at Ocean Beach.
The Masters men's crew, The Lepers, came prepared to defend their title.
An under-19 girls' crew, The Bruisers, were making their debut appearance at this carnival.
The Lepers secured an impressive record with three first-place finishes and a solid second, giving them the lead.
The Bruisers left their mark with one first-place finish, two strong seconds, and a disputed third, landing them third on the leader board.
"In classic boatie weather, the first carnival of the season had small but spirited surf and occasional showers," said Umina club publicity officer Mr Mike Begg.
"Weather, tide, and the conditions all conspired to create an exciting short course with four rounds.
"The surf, though small, delivered plenty of action as boats from far and wide, including Redhead, Swansea, as well as Central Coast crews, navigated the waves with flair.
"There were sideways entries, a few lost crews and oars, and even some boats finishing in reverse."
