Academic achievement recognised
Brisbane Water Secondary College held an assembly on Wednesday, August 20, at the Woy Woy campus to recognise the academic achievement of students from both campuses.
Students from each year level and their parents attended and the students were presented with certificates and momentos.
The principal of the college, Mr Pat Lewis, said: "This is an event to encourage these students but also to emphasise the importance we place on the academic achievement of our students."
The head teacher for teaching and learning, Mrs Lorraine Hickey, said that a mid-year assembly consisting exclusively of academic award recipients and their parents was newly created and will now be held annually.
Mrs Hickey said the assembly was "an intimate and friendly gathering bringing the cream of the crop together".
She said the point of holding the event mid-year was to encourage better academic performance in the latter half of the year.
Mr Hickey said: "We've had positive feedback - lots of happy parents.
"We have some brilliant students."
Kate Kennedy and Angela Ainsworth, year 10 students and award recipients, said that recognition at such assemblies should happen more often.
Academic achievement was more acceptable among peers than it used to be, they said.
Kate said: "It's nice to be recognised as an achiever."
Angela said: "I'm proud of my school."
