Awards for geography

Students from Umina Campus have received awards for their geography skills and knowledge in the annual Australian Geographical Competition.

They were among 77,500 students from 800 schools across the nation who participated in the competition in late March.

From Year 8, Lisa Huri and Charis Monaghan gained high distinctions, Selina Harlum, Ian Limb, Kareem Mohamed and Mitchell Rogers gained distinctions.

From Year 9, Mitchell King gained a high distinction, Lauren O'Hara and Kristy Travers gained distinctions, Jacqueline Steward and Melissa Alderson gained credits.

All other students received certificates of participation.

For the school to have done so well is rewarding for both students and teachers.

The competition is designed to promote the study of geography in Australian schools and encourage a greater appreciation of the world.

As well as photo, map and graph interpretation questions, the multiple choice quiz tested students geographical knowledge of a wide range of issues, including geopolitical issues of East Timor, Iraq, and North Korea.

The Australian Geographical Competition is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers Association and the Royal Geographic Society of Queensland, and is sponsored by the National Geographical Channel.
