Students help clean Woy Woy Bay

Students from Umina campus of Brisbane Water Secondary College joined Clean4Shore to remove rubbish from Woy Woy Bay earlier this month.

"A big high tide which allowed access to Woy Woy Bay," said Clean4Shore co-ordinator Mr Graham "Jono" Johnston.

The group collected 11 full bags of small litter along the railway line towards and in front of the station.

He said it all came from roadside litter washed into the Bay, a result of poor residential and industrial practices.

Five very large plastic pallets had also been dumped into the Bay and were loaded onboard by the students.

At Pelican Island, the team found much less small litter but 27 small oyster baskets were collected from the mangroves.

"Possibly many more are still to be found."

He said it was a "big effort" to remove the baskets, all found 100 metres from the foreshore.

A total of 420kg was taken to Woy Woy tip.
