Canoe training winds down as season comes to an end

Central Coast Outrigger Canoe Club has wound up training sessions as the competition season comes to a close.

The club had a successful season, competing in six regattas around the state, and the Sydney Harbour Challenge, said club media officer Ms Rosemary Chapman.

"We attended all races hosted by NSW Zone this season, fielding at least one crew and up to four crews at some regattas," she said.

Central Coast had two teams that were state champions.

The Platinum team, aged 70 plus, received a special award at State titles held at Port Stephens.

This crew, consisting of Ally Binfield, Sue Giaquinto, Gary Machin, John Lovdee, John Illife and Pam Illife were the only team entered in their division.

"They were put in a race with much younger competitors acquitting themselves as equals," said Ms Chapman.

Crew member Ally Binfield said: "As the only Platinum Team in the event, we could not claim a first but we were presented with special medals at the awards function - a very satisfying result."

The club grew through the season, and currently has 67 members, 22 of whom are aged over 70.

"We are on the water four or five days a week, so our canoes see a lot of use.

"Outrigger paddling offers something for all levels of paddler, whether you choose to race competitively or not.

"Winter is a great time to learn to paddle."
