Time for dental services to be covered by Medicare
In her letter of May 19, Ms Jane Hendy is absolutely right: it is way overdue for dental services to be covered by Medicare.
For far too long, successive governments have declined adding dental care to Medicare by hiding behind the 19th Century fiction that tooth decay is a "self-inflicted injury" from eating sugary foods.
This ignores a basic fact of human nutrition that we are hard-wired to eat sugary foods as that's how we get our essential Vitamin C.
Nature tempts us with delicious sugary fruits which also just happen to have this essential vitamin.
Federal Labor has just won win an impressive result, so it's a golden opportunity to implement this way-overdue measure to have the costs of essential dental care recoverable via Medicare.
So, Dr Gordon Reid, our local Federal MP, go advocate for it. Now.
