Man dies in St Huberts Island house fire
A man has died in a house fire on St Huberts Island just after 5:30am on Tuesday, July 2.
Umina firefighters were called to the fire at St Hubert's island, with all three fire trucks responding.
They arrived to find the house well alight.
Shortly after other services arrived including NSW Police, Ambulance and Rural Fire Service brigades.
The crews extinguished the fire with houses either side not damaged.
The death has underlined a call for vigilance by Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch the previous week
On Thursday, June 27, Ms Tesch said the Central Coast had the third highest number of residential fires last winter, with kitchen fires the most common.
Working smoke alarms had the potential to turn this situation around, said Ms Tesch.
"A working smoke alarm can mean the difference between getting out of a fire alive and tragedy."
"The number of residential fires and the losses of life in the community are devastating and debilitating for everyone.
"The simple act of checking your smoke alarm - that small, inexpensive device on the ceiling - may have contributed to saving some of these people."
Ms Tesch urged residents to request a Safety Visit from Fire and Rescue NSW:
"During a Safety Visit, smoke alarms will be checked that they are in good working condition and are installed in suitable areas.
"For residents without a smoke alarm, firefighters will install a long-life battery-powered smoke alarm as well as replace existing smoke alarm batteries all at no cost."
Home fire safety visits can be booked online at www.fire.nsw.gov.au/visits.
