Residents urged to support Kook Warriors' cancer cause
Umina's Kook Warriors are raising money for cancer research, by getting in the water every day for a surf or swim as part of "SurFebruary".
The annual event is held in support of Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, which conducts research into cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and wellness.
Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch is supporting the Kook Warriors and encouraging the work of Chris O'Brien Lifehouse by urging residents to get involved.
"What a fantastic opportunity for the community to take advantage of our gorgeous beaches while also supporting an incredible cause," she said.
"Cancer takes an immeasurable toll on the lives of individuals, their families, and our wider community, not just physically, but also emotionally and financially.
"Supporting the Kook Warriors' SurFebruary efforts is a thoughtful way for our community to show support for this vital research."
According to the Cancer Council, one in two Australians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime, she said.
"The Chris O'Brien Lifehouse offers world-class facilities and treatments to provide comprehensive and expert care to people affected by cancer, while also conducting inspirational and innovative research."
Kook Warriors leader Ms Vanessa Hession said: "Going through cancer, having survived that, I want everyone to have the best opportunity and chance to get through.
"The research at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse is next level.
"Surfing is something that everyone loves.
"It brings the community together.
"Our hope for SurFebruary is that we are able to rally the community and build momentum for this amazing cause."
