Umina United defeat Woongarrah in memorial round

Umina United Women's Premier League team played Woongarrah in the Aurelia Haynes Memorial Round at Umina Oval on Sunday, August 11.

The game was played in memory of Umina player Aurelia Haynes who died in her sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, July 30, at the age of 19.

Aurelia was a member of Umina's Women's Premier League squad and joined the club at the start of this season after stints playing in Sydney and in the Canberra United Academy.

Despite winning 4-2, Umina coach Michael Penn said: "This game, as anticipated, was an emotional time for us.

"I would personally like to thank Central Coast Football for their arrangement of the memorial WPL round and Woongarrah players for the flowers.

"I would also like to thank the Umina club committee members, players and supporters for their compassionate support and assistance to the team during this time."

Umina began the game on the front foot by taking the game to the visitors, but conceded goals against the run of play.

The Wildcats, with a through ball for Kelly Hogan, scored the opening goal and put Woongarrah 1-0 up.

For the next 20 minutes, Woongarrah dominated possession, continuing to threaten the Umina goal.

Woongarrah found their second goal with Kelly Hogan finding the back of the net.

With only five minutes remaining on the clock before half time, Umina got on a late roll and scored to go into half time 2-1 down.

For the majority of the second half, Woongarrah came second to the ball.

Umina came out with more desire to win the small battles and two quick goals saw the score turn around to 3-2 in favour of the E-Gals.

With roughly 10 minutes left to play, some great attacking play and a switch from the right to left saw Umina score the fourth goal of the day.

The 4-2 victory saw a hattrick to Kate Styles and a goal to Hannah Batten.

Match official was Peter Hall.
