Bowling club holds annual RUOK Bowls day
Umina Beach Mens Bowling Club will hold its annual RUOK Bowls event from 12:30pm on Thursday, September 14.
"The popular event will see a 'sea of yellow' on the greens as bowlers from around the Peninsula enjoy both a serious and fun time," said bowls club welfare officer Mr Rex Hunt.
"The day is part of an annual national 'conversation movement' encouraging the art of listening," he said.
"It attempts to equip and encourage men to be observant of one's mates, have conversations with others, and to be open and honest about their state of mind.
"Founded by Gavin Larkin in 2009, following the death of his father Barry, it works collaboratively with experts in suicide prevention and mental illness.
"It is important work we will be doing, both for ourselves as individuals and for our clubs or regular bowls colleagues," Mr Hunt said.
"Every day is the day to start a conversation using four simple steps: 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen 3. Encourage action and 4. Check in."
