Aged care home expects more overseas workers soon
A Woy Woy aged care home is expecting a second group of overseas workers to join its staff this month.
More workers from the Philippines are expected to join the staff at Blue Wave Living this month, said chief executive Mr Matt Downie.
"We look forward to these new team members becoming a long-term part of the Blue Wave team.
"We will be hosting another staff barbecue in early September as part of our welcome to Blue Wave for our new staff, as well as for our existing staff to enjoy."
Mr Downie said the additional team members came "at a pivotal moment as we steadily transition towards opening up new areas following our building works - both extension of existing facility and internal re-build work".
He said: "The need for additional qualified staff to work in aged care has become acute, with many operators facing extreme challenges.
"It will only become more so, as our industry is required to grow significantly over the next 20 plus years, to meet the unprecedented growth in our aging population.
"While migration is one solution, there is more which needs to be done by all levels of government to continue to support the sector: Ensuring that our industry remains competitive with wages for staff, that we have good access to the education required to qualify staff, and that there is access to affordable housing for care staff.
"There are complexities around all these issues and more which will require a collaborative approach from all involved with the sector to ensure they can be overcome.
"Australians deserve a sustainable aged care system," he said.
