Bays group calls for slower, courteous driving
The Bays Community Group is asking people to drive more slowly and with courtesy in the streets around the Bays.
"For many years your Committee has been attempting to persuade the powers that be to do something about the speed of vehicles in The Bays," said president Ms Gwynneth Weir.
"While the legal maximum speed limit is 50kmh, there are very few places in The Bays where 50kmh is a safe speed.
"We have very narrow roads, blind corners and, in most places, no footpaths or anywhere to walk safely beside the road.
"The situation has now become more critical due to the shift in the demographics of The Bays.
More young families are moving in and so we have more children walking to and from the bus and more people walking around The Bays with young children and pushing strollers."
Ms Weir said the group's committee had started a new campaign with the authorities to make the roads safer.
"But please do your part.
"Give way as indicated by the signs where the road only allows for one vehicle and be courteous and considerate to your fellow residents as you come and go from The Bays.
"The roads have not changed since any of us moved in.
"We were all aware of the challenges and limitations of our roads when we moved here, and maybe that was one of the things that appealed to you about The Bays?
"So, please, be mindful of the roads we actually have and drive appropriately and safely."
