Pearl Beach history on sale after Kings Birthday honour
The Pearl Beach Progress Association is to reprint a history of Pearl Beach to commemorate the Kings Birthday honour for its author Dr Beverley Kingston.
Dr Kingston was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to community history and tertiary education.
The association will sell her book Pearl Beach and Progress: The Story of a Community and an Ideal 1929-2009.
Proceeds of sales at $20 each will go towards maintenance of the Pearl Beach Memorial Hall.
"The book was written to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Pearl Beach Progress Association," said association publicity officer Ms Lynne Lillico.
"The book explains how Pearl Beach came to be established.
"The Progress Association was formed more or less as it was possible to buy land here, so its history parallels that of the area.
"Several estates on the Woy Woy Peninsula were developed after World War 1 by the Staples family, with the first land registered in 1927 and the first house built soon after.
"Pearl Beach continued as a fishing camp into the 1930s.
"Today Pearl Beach is know for spectacular scenic and environmental qualities set in a small, friendly, caring community which enjoys living in the middle of a national park, Brisbane Water National Park, and Broken Bay."
Dr Kingston was a committee member of Pearl Beach Progress Association from 2017 to 2021.
The book may be purchased by emailing pearlbeachprogress.org.au or phoning 4344 2319. Cash or card accepted for payment.
