Learning Community launches Futures Academy
The Brisbane Water Learning Community has launched its Futures Academy for High Performing Athletes at Woy Woy campus of Brisbane Water Secondary College on Friday, July 20.
The Learning Community comprises Brisbane Water Secondary College and its five feeder primary schools: Woy Woy Public School, Woy Woy South Public School, Ettalong Public School, Umina Beach Public School and Empire Bay Public School.
The vision of the academy is "to offer high-performance opportunities within the public education system".
"We are committed to creating an environment where young athletes can develop their skills, achieve their athletic goals and maintain strong academic foundations - all while staying connected to their community.
"By providing access to top-tier coaching, training and support, we aim to help students thrive and develop holistically."
Woy Woy campus principal Ms Rebecca Cooper said: "At the heart of the academy is a bold vision that public education can provide world-class opportunities.
"Through elite coaching, wellbeing support, leadership development and academic guidance, and all free of charge, we are investing in the full potential of our students.
The launch was addressed by international athletes including Australian Rugby 7's champion Faith Nathan and Olympic-level boxer Satali Tevi-Fuimaono.
"Their stories showed our students that greatness can come from here: from our schools, our streets, and our community."
The Futures Academy program director Ms Kimberley Grant and its program lead Mr Sam Quick spoke about the program.
Ms Cooper said that "in the unity of our educational leaders, from early years through to senior schooling, our principals will collaborate closely to lift outcomes for all".
"The launch brought together school leaders, local businesses, sports clubs, industry professionals and political representatives."
