Award for student who initiated First Aid training
The former Woy Woy South primary school student responsible for initiating First Aid training for all Year 6 students on the Peninsula has been presented with a Rotary Community Service Award.
Now a Gosford High School student, Mara Hatfield Favand received the "prestigious" award at the recent Changeover Dinner of the Rotary Club of Umina Beach, according to club publicity officer Mr Pat Lewis.
"In 2022, as a student at Woy Woy South, Mara and her school captain, Jonty Beaton, addressed a meeting of the club seeking support for their idea of providing all of their Year 6 classmates a Red Cross First Aid Course and certificate.
"Their presentation, along with their demonstration large Teddy, so impressed Rotary club members that they agreed to help.
"That Year 6 class received their course and certificates and, through continued involvement with Mara, this program has now been expanded to all six primary schools on the Peninsula for five years.
"This means that some 300 Year 6 students every year over the next five years will graduate with an accredited First Aid Certificate."
