Three groups join for Ettalong foreshore tree proposal
Three community groups are proposing that The Esplanade at Ettalong Beach be enhanced with trees and vegetation that provide shade and ocean views, as well as dune stability.
The Grow Urban Shade Trees group, Rotary Brisbane Water and the Peninsula Residents Association have produced an eight-page booklet illustrating the effect they would like to see.
"When views and trees coexist, the result is enhanced beauty, health and comfort for all," the booklet says, showing examples at Palm Beach, Palm Cove, Pretty Beach and Elizabeth Bay.
"As well as providing shade, beauty and habitat, trees are also an important component of foreshore erosion prevention and management.
"Without trees, the new pathway and picnic tables at Ettalong will remain largely unusable throughout summer.
"The complete lack of shade trees is unsafe for the community and reduces the liveability, desirability and value to surrounding property and business.
"Ettalong is already suffering from urban heat island effect.
"Temperatures are vastly increased by large areas of unshaded man-made surfaces."
Urban Shade Trees group member Ms Jen Wilder said: "Proposals to upgrade Ettalong foreshore should be science-led.
"I would like to see a balance between dense ground cover for dune stability and tall trees providing shade and allowing filtered views.
"I feel that has broad community support," she said.
