Council staff to 'hold conversations' about Pelican Park

Central Coast Council has agreed to delay demolition of Pelican Park at the Woy Woy Fishermen's Wharf until after it has held "conversations with the community".

As residents watched large fencing encircling Pelican Park, Member for Gosford Ms Liesl Tesch secured another commitment from Central Coast Council to hold off on the planned demolition of Pelican Park.

She said Council staff were preparing the site for demolition on Tuesday.

"Council has advised that the demolition has now been delayed until further conversations with the community have been undertaken," she said.

"At around 10:30am this morning, Council let me know that they had ordered the removal of the fencing and will not demolish our beloved park until they speak further with our community."

"I welcome this decision by Council and I thank them for stopping demolition to hear the voices of our community.

"It is very important that in the absence of councillors, the voice of democracy and transparent community communication and consultation continues.

"If Council believe Pelican Park is broken, then let's fix it.

"If it is unsafe, let's make it safe.

"If it doesn't meet standards, let's lift the park to make it meet these standards.

"The park has been a staple of the Woy Woy Peninsula community for years.

"So many of our local families have fond memories of visiting and playing the park, getting a fish and chip order at Fishermen's Wharf and watching the pelican feeding.

"We need to wait until Covid restrictions are lifted to ensure we can have an open community consultation process."

Ms Tesch called on community members to keep adding pressure by writing to Council and signing the petition out the front of her office or on the Woy Woy Fishermen's Wharf Facebook page.
