Woy Woy referee named NSW young official of the year
Woy Woy touch football referee Mason Colwell has been named a NSW Community Sports Awards winner.
The 20-year-old was named Young Official of the Year.
The Awards night, conducted at Bankwest Stadium by Sport NSW, recognised outstanding achievements and contributions to community sport in NSW over the past year largely carried out by a volunteer workforce.
He was honoured at the ceremony hosted by NSW Minister for Sport Ms Natalie Ward.
Mason Colwell was recognised for his outstanding achievements and contributions to touch football.
Colwell is a regular referee at four different touch competitions: Peninsula Senior Touch, Peninsula Junior Touch, Central Coast Touch and Berkeley Vale Touch.
He also supported inter-school touch competitions at Loreto Normanhurst and Barker College plus various gala days and combined high school competitions.
In March this year, Mason Colwell was upgraded to a Level 6 Referee, the highest referee accreditation possible.
This now allows him to be selected for international touch tournaments, such as Trans-Tasman and World Cups.
He was named as part of the referee team for the State of Origin Touch Tournament (NSW v Queensland) held this month.
This places him in the top 50 referees in Australia.
Sport NSW chairperson Ms Carolyn Campbell congratulated Ms Colwell on his "wonderful commitment to sport" in NSW.
"Sport has the magnetic capacity to draw people together from different cultures and backgrounds within local communities to enjoy active, healthy lifestyles," said Ms Campbell.
"At the heart of community sport has been more than 500,000 selfless volunteers who give up their precious time to ensure sports is played throughout the year."
