Baby fur seal robot to provide dementia therapy
An aged care facility in Umina has bought robot, based on the appearance of a baby fur seal, as therapy for its dementia patients.
The furry "Paro" robot, which produces sounds similar to a baby seal, is designed to have a calming effect and to elicit emotional responses from dementia patients
It is said to have dual 32-bit processors, a number of microphones, tactile sensors covering its fur, and to be able to move its limbs and body.
The robot is designed respond to petting, to actively seek eye contact, to learn and respond to words and sounds, and to remember faces and actions that generate a favorable reaction.
As well as the robot, the Village is setting up a sensory room in Don Leggett House.
It also has a red buggy for "scenic rides leaving from Pozieres House".
