Empire Bay Marina to be assessed for contamination

The Empire Bay Marina is to be assessed for contamination, according to Member for Terrigal Mr Adam Crouch.

He said the detailed assessment was commissioned by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment Crown Lands division.

"Crown Lands is issuing a factsheet to keep local residents informed on what has occurred to date, and what is planned for the future."

The detailed assessment was expected to determine the type, extent and level of contamination on the site and advise on requirements for site remediation.

Together with building assessments, it would "help inform next steps".

Crown Lands has instructed boat owners to remove their vessels from the marina prior to the contamination assessment getting underway.

"Central Coast Ferries has committed to moving their vessel to an alternative mooring location.

"There will be no disruption to the regular ferry service."

Boat owners failing to vacate the marina face fines of up to $1100 for individuals and $2200 for corporations as well as the impounding of their vessels.

The "fact sheet" states that Crown Lands has taken over the care, control and management of the Empire Bay Marina.

"Due to the site's history as a commercial marina, with associated slipway and fuel storage, there is the potential for contamination.

"Crown Lands will engage a consultant to investigate the site and determine the remediation actions that may be required."

The contamination investigation is expected to be completed by late March.

"We will continue to consult with relevant stakeholders on the future of this site."
