Cattle team wins shows

Brisbane Water Secondary College's cattle team has continued success with their livestock winning a number of categories at the Maitland and Canberra Shows in February.

"They have begun 2004 living up to the outstanding reputation they have established over previous years," said college principal Mr Pat Lewis.

"Late last month, they took four of their limousin steers to the Maitland Show and came away with maximum results."

Entered into two classes, the animals took out first and second place in each, with one being named champion steer of the show.

"This result was particularly prestigious as the win was against professional breeders as well as other school groups," Mr Lewis said.

The students also excelled in parading their cattle.

Three students, Ashlee Austin, Kristy Warren, and Emma Duckworth, were selected to parade at the upcoming Royal Easter Show.

In late February, the team was again on the show scene when they took five steers to the Canberra Show.

Every animal was placed first in its class.

Among the 18 ribbons won, major awards were Show Champion and Reserve Carcass Champion, and Reserve Junior Limosin female.

Students also won a host of awards for parading, with Ashlee Austin winning her class.

"These are outstanding results for an area of the state not renowned for raising beef cattle and indicate the outstanding level of expertise which the students have gained through their teachers, Geoff Spence and Mark Fisher, and farm assistant, Ron Unsworth," Mr Lewis said.
