Southern in one-goal loss to Terrigal
Southern and Ettalong lost 0-1 to Terrigal in round 16 of Women's Premier League soccer.
SEU was looking to bounce back after some recent losses, while Terrigal chased victory to stay in reach of the fourth spot.
In the end, Georgah Shearim's goal was the only thing that separated these two sides after a hard-fought ninety minutes.
With Catherine Higgonson-Smith once again stepping up for Southern to help in their starting lineup, and two more under-16s to fill the bench, SEU was determined to not give Terrigal an inch.
SEU pushed the attack with most possession in the first 20 minutes within Terrigal's half.
But Terrigal had their chances, attacking well on the counter but failing to hit the target.
A foul in the 10th minute just outside the 18-yard box gave Terrigal their first real chance at goal, and Elizabeth Jamieson her first yellow card.
The shot went high over the crossbar.
Not having a second assistant was proving detrimental for SEU, as several onside runs were deemed offside by the referee.
One such call left Brooke Hardie so antagonised that she was shown a yellow card for kicking the ball away.
Despite the more dominant play of the ball, it was Terrigal who struck first.
A Mackenna Milton corner was headed home by Georgah Shearim.
At the other end of the park, SEU had their share of corners and breaks on goal too.
In the 30th minute, Hannah Davidson turned her defender and had a run at goal.
Terrigal's keeper, Rochelle Davies, had catlike reflexes to save a well-driven shot by Hannah.
Not two minutes later, Terrigal countered, and it was SEU's keeper Amelie Griggs who was called into action, diving low and wide to save another possible goal for Terrigal.
The second half started with two rather evenly matched teams jockeying for their share of possession and attacks on goal.
Five minutes in, Brooke Hardie was the recipient of a bad challenge to her hip, and Brooke had to come off to receive treatment.
But true to Brooke's tough nature, she returned to the field shortly afterwards.
The 53rd minute saw a poor first touch for Terrigal's keeper from a back pass, allowing Hannah an opportunity to shoot.
The keeper kicked through Hannah to clear the ball.
Southern shouted for a penalty, but were left stunned when a foul was awarded against the Southern attacker.
Another foul on Hannah allowed Larna Homer to shoot for goal with a free kick 25 yards out, centre of the goal, but the effort was saved by the opposition keeper.
At the other end, a poor goal kick allowed Gabriella Healey to make it 2-0, but her shot was high over the crossbar, not testing the keeper at all.
A second yellow card for SEUs Elizabeth Jamieson meant they were down to 10 players, with Under-16's Aspen Balshaw filling in her role now.
A back-and-forth match continued, neither team finishing off half chances, and the game ending in a 1-0 victory for Terrigal.
Match official was Larry Jenkins.
