Umina Mall demolition makes way for new centre

The demolition of the burnt-out Umina mall was all but completed within the space of five days last week.

Only the frame of the bottle shop and store remained.

The demolition makes way for the construction of a new shopping centre on a square site four times the area of Umina Mall, extending from Lone Pine Ave to Pozieres Ave and back to include vacant land at the rear of the Mall.

Council approval for the development was given 10 years ago, but progress stalled over the sale by Council of a public laneway to Mall owners, Laundy Exhibition.

The matter was brought to a head when a fire destroyed the Mall in January last year, and the Council was pressured to facilitate a clean-up and the redevelopment.
