New graduate appointed to Umina fire station

Umina Fire Station in Trafalgar Ave, Woy Woy, has been allocated one of 264 new graduates of the Fire and Rescue NSW Emergency Services Academy at Orchard Hills

Mr Ethan Mabberley has been appointed as an on-call "retained" firefighter.

The graduates came from a variety of backgrounds, including a former professional rally car co-driver, a martial arts instructor, a former dairy farm manager, a youth worker and a number of teachers.

Commissioner Paul Baxter congratulated the new recruits at the graduation ceremony.

"Becoming a firefighter is no easy feat.

"We attract 6000-8000 applications each year, yet of these thousands, only an elite few are chosen," he said.
