Trees group hosts an early Tree Day project

The Grow Urban Shade Trees group hosted an early project for National Tree Day on Sunday, July 6.

The group planted eight trees on a street where a concrete footpath was recently installed.

"The team was disappointed that trees had not been included in this project and requested that Council install trees to provide shade for pedestrian comfort and safety," said group member Ms Jen Wilder.

"Council obliged by consulting with residents who lived along the length of the new footpath, which led to 11 requests for trees."

With the council unable to proceed with planting, the group took on the task, "not wanting to miss an opportunity for council-approved planting".

With the help of family, friends and supporters, eight trees were planted with another three coming soon.

"We look forward to our Council initiating the Street Tree Pilot Program which will see more canopy trees planted in the near future."
