AFL team were 'heartbreakingly close to victory'

The Umina Beach Public School AFL team travelled to Hylton Moore Oval, East Gosford, on Tuesday, July 25, to play the first of three rounds of the State Knockout Competition.

In the first round the boys defeated Gosford Public School 41 to 16.

They played even better in the second round, to beat a strong Ettalong Public School team 45 to 25.

The final game for the day saw them pitted against Woy Woy South Public School.

In a close contest where the lead changed on several occasions, the boys came "heartbreakingly close to victory", going down by a single point 41 to 40.

"It has been a pleasure to coach these boys each Wednesday morning before school.

"Their tenacity and good sportsmanship in every game has made them fine ambassadors for our school," Umina Beach principal Mr Greg Buist said.
