Money raised for shelter boxes
The Rotary Club of Woy Woy has collected almost $1000 for the victims of natural disasters in the Asia-Pacific.
A group of rotary club members collected the donations at Deepwater Plaza, Woy Woy, in response to the deployment of Shelterboxes to victims of natural disasters.
According to public relations director Mr Tony Cameron, the total donation was divided into three separate contributions where victims of the Philippines received $200, Samoa $100 and $500 to Sumatra.
"Each Shelterbox is a large, lightweight and waterproof box which can be used for water or food storage," Mr Cameron said.
"At delivery each Shelterbox contains a 10-person tent, blankets and ground sheets for warmth and protection, a wood burning multi-fuel stove which can burn anything from diesel to old paint, plus pans, utensils, bowls, mugs and water storage.
"This forms the heart of the new home where water is boiled, food is cooked and families congregate.
"A basic tool kit containing hammer, axe, saw, trenching shovel, hoe head, pliers and wire cutters for self sufficiency is also provided as well as a children's pack containing drawing books, crayons and pens.
"These small gifts are treasured by children who have lost most, if not all, their possessions.
"The contents of each box can be adapted to the specific disaster.
"Each Shelterbox costs $1200."
Mr Cameron said to supplement the funds raised at Deepwater Plaza the Rotary Club of Woy Woy would conduct a Trivia Night at the Ettalong Beach Scout Hall in Picnic Pde on Friday, November 6.
The evening starts from 6.30pm and costs $20 per head for tables of up to eight.
Coffee, tea and cake are provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own snacks and drinks.
