Blues artists at theatre

The Peninsula Theatre in Woy Woy will play host to an "acoustic super group" of blues artists on May 27.

Artists will include the Brewster Brothers, Jim Conway, Paul Burton and Earlwood Greg.

The Brewster Brothers, Rick and John Brewster, have played in bands including The Angels, Angel City, The Original Angels Band, the Moonshine Jug and String Band, the Party Boys and the Bombers.

Rick Brewster's instruments of choice are the keyboard, electric guitar, washboard and vocals, while John Brewster's instruments of choice are vocals, guitar and harmonica.

The Brewster Brothers recently released their live EP "Any Day".

"What started out as the quiet airing of new material in out-of-the-way venues has snowballed and is gaining momentum across the country," said Laycock street theatre marketing coordinator Ms Lisa Kelly.

"Songs such as You and I, Engine of the World, No Place Like Home, Do It Again, Lives of Grace, Brothers Keeper, When Love is Free, and Angeline are a development of the principles of 70's legendary band The Angels.

"The Brewster Brothers maintain the creative integrity that commands audience participation."

Ms Kelly said Jim Conway was acknowledged as a highly accomplished harmonica player whose distinctive style was well known to blues, jazz and country music enthusiasts.

His extensive career includes national tours with American bluesman Brownie McGhee, The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, Circus Oz and The Backsliders.

Paul Burton has been a professional musician for 20 years, touring and recording with many artists including Austen Tayshus, Ian Moss, John Williamson, Dave Tice and The Headhunters, Kevin Borich, Don Walker (Catfish), Kevin Carmody, Doug Mulray, Eddy Youngblood, Milky Bar Kids, Ed Kuepper, Nathan Cavaleri, Paul Kelly, Graeme Connors, Pete Wells (Rose Tatoo), Greedy Smith (Mental As Anything) and Phil Emmanuel.

He currently manages and plays in his own band The Shuffle Kings.

"Earlwood Greg is a seasoned blues musician," Ms Kelly said.

"He sings, plays lapsteel, acoustic and electric guitars and organises some of the best blues musicians available to appear on his home turf on the Peninsula."

The Acoustic Super Group concert will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 8pm.

Tickets cost $22.50.
