Junior Roosters play grand final

Woy Woy Roosters Junior Rugby League under-14s division one team played the Toukley Hawks in the grand final on Sunday, September 11, at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford, but went down 31-12.

The under-14s team was the sole Peninsula representative over the grand final weekend after the team defeated Terrigal 18-12 in the final.

The under-12s division one team narrowly missed out on the grand final and finished fourth on the competition ladder, after it was defeated by 22-6 in the final by Terrigal the previous weekend.

Woy Woy Roosters Junior Rugby League Football Club president Mr Tim McParlane said the under-14s team "played solidly in the first half with Sam Bovis making valuable ground early with his scoots from dummy half which had the Toukley defence on the back foot and Rhys Kearns causing trouble every time he had the ball in his hands".

"Unfortunately Brad Taylor had to leave the field early after succumbing to the flu after battling gallantly during the week to be right for the game and the team also lost Liam Swan after receiving a late high shot.

"Their defence was solid all half with Toukley taking a narrow lead at the break, but Woy Woy were still firmly in the game," he said.

The second half saw a more determined and focused Toukley team and the Woy Woy boys were unable to match them, with Toukley running out victorious.

"All the Woy Woy boys showed true grit throughout the game and tried hard until the final whistle and should be proud of their effort," said Mr McParlane.

"Pick of the Woy Woy players were Rhys Kearns who tried hard all game and fullback Joe Williams who saved at least two tries and bought the ball back from kicks at pace and troubled the Toukley defence whenever he was involved.

"The way the team has represented the club and themselves and played the game all year is a credit to them all and the coaching staff.

"I hope to see all the boys back next season for the clubs 50th anniversary year when I know they'll give the 15-1's title a good crack."
