Our flag
I submit the following anonymous poem in response to those who have written about changing the flag
I am usually asked for at least a couple of copies whenever I recite it.
Our Flag
Our flag bears the stars that blaze in the night,
In our southern sky of blue
And that little old flag in the corner
Is part of our heritage too.
It's for the English, the Scotts and the Irish
Who were sent to the ends of the earth;
The rogues, the dreamers and schemers,
Who gave our Australia its birth.
And those who are shouting to change it,
Don't seem to quite understand,
It's the flag of our law and our language,
Not the flag of some far away land.
There are plenty now who will tell you
Of how when Europe was plunged into night
That little old flag in the corner
Became their symbol of freedom and light!
It don't mean we owe our allegiance
To a forgotten imperial dream;
We've the stars to show where we're going
And the old flag to show where we've been!
It is only an old piece of bunting,
It is only an old piece of rag,
But there's thousands who fought for its honour
And died in defence of our flag!
