Teams in Steve Ella Cup

Woy Woy Public School's Sevens Rugby League Team participated in the Steve Ella Cup at Berkeley Vale Oval on May 7.

"The boys gave their very best in each of the four matches played, achieving fifth place in the competition," team coordinator Mr Daniel Betts said.

"We won the first match we played, against Terrigal Red, six points to nil, with Jarrod Taylor taking out the man-of-the-match honours and Josh Sugden and Liam Stone also distinguishing themselves with the quality of their play.

"Unfortunately we lost the second match of the day to eventual finalists, Kincumber, by six points to nil.

"Ryan Avery was the man-of-the-match, and Zane Smith and Coen Church also had very strong games.

"We were back to our winning ways in the third game against St John Fisher, with a six to nil victory.

"Dean Sullivan took out man-of-the-match honours, and Daniel Taylor (the youngest player on the team) and Liam Stone, both played very strongly.

"In the final game of the day, we had a convincing 10 points to nil victory over Kanwal Blue, but unfortunately it was not quite enough to get us into the semi-finals of the competition.

"Zane Smith again had an outstanding game, as did Josh Sugden and Sean Downey.

"The standard of Rugby League played by our boys was impressive to say the least, and this certainly bodes well for future 13-a-side competitions."
