When politicians believed in something
Politicians are often seen as sleazy and money-grubbing.
But it wasn't like that in the old days.
Most of the old politicians actually believed in something and were even proud to serve the public.
Bertram "Tubby" Stevens was premier of NSW for at least two terms and when he retired he lived in poverty in Glebe.
His opponent Jack Lang got Parliament to give him a State pension so Tubby wouldn't starve to death.
What a contrast to today where they live fat off the public purse and cop a lovely loaf in the private sector as well.
