Students join Clean4Shore for Clean-up Day
Students from Brisbane Waters Secondary College spent Schools Clean-up Australia Day with local marine clean-up organisation Clean4shore.
A peak high tide saw the group move to Cockle Bay, near Empire Bay Public School, with the mangroves yielding plenty of plastic bottles and soft plastic, according to co-ordinator Mr Graham "Jono" Johnston.
Five balls were found at the first drop off point.
Oyster production materials and marine ply was again present with 14 baskets, oyster mesh and rubber found in Cockle Bay.
"Closer to the old jetty, plenty more plastic and glass beer bottles were collected," said Mr Johnston.
The group found that the small Island at the end of Empire Bay channel had been frequented by "irresponsible campers", with a tree cut down to make a tarpaulin shelter, he said.
More beer bottles were collected.
A small damaged fibreglass dingy was pulled from the mangroves along Empire Bay.
Rileys Island foreshore was cleaned for 150 metres, with another three bags of plastics and oyster baskets removed.
The group removed another abandoned campsite on Pelican Island's eastern foreshore close to Paddy's Channel.
"It was a good effort by these boys, well supported by the supervising staff, with 260kg off-loaded at Woy Woy Tip."
