Aunt moves in to aged care facility to be near neice

A staff member at a local aged care facility has so impressed her aunt that she has decided to become a resident at the facility.

Peninsula Villages' leisure and lifestyle advocate Ms Susan McMillan was so confident in the care at facility that she encouraged her aunt, Ms Anas Davis, 82, to move in.

She said she knew her aunt would be well taken care of and that she would have a happy and fulfilling life at the facility.

"I knew that Peninsula Villages was the right place for my aunt," she said.

Ms Davis said she was grateful for her niece's support and for the opportunity to live at Peninsula Villages.

Born deaf in Bourke, Ms Davis grew up on her family's sheep and cattle farm, Bendemeer.

Despite her hearing impairment, she has never let anything hold her back.

She learned to herd sheep on her motorbike, care for baby animals and even change the oil and check the tyres on her family's motorbikes.

Ms Davis said she had a close bond with her family, and that she especially cherished her time with her sister, Gae, and nieces and nephew, Catherine, Susan and Joseph.

She would often take them on picnics and motorbike rides.

When her father died in 1993, she moved in with her mother in Bourke and cared for her until she passed away in Bourke Hospital.

Ms Davis then moved in with her sister in Sydney before settling into a retirement village in Merrylands.

Her sister Gae and niece Susan, became her lifelines, making regular visits and taking her shopping.

But Ms Davis said she missed her family on the Central Coast, especially her niece Susan, and, in June this year, decided to move to Peninsula Villages to be closer to her.

Both now cherish the time that they get to spend together, and are grateful for the supportive community that they have found at the facility.

"I'm so glad that she's here," said Ms McMillan.
