Reid launches Friends of Uluru Statement group
Labor Member for Robertson Dr Gordon Reid has launched "the Parliamentary Friends of the Uluru Statement from the Heart" group at Parliament House on Monday, February 13.
He launched it along with co-chairs, independent Member for Wentworth Ms Allegra Spender and Liberal Federal Member for Bass Ms Bridget Archer.
Dr Reid said the Parliamentary group would champion the Yes Campaign in the lead-up to the referendum to be held later in the year.
"The time has come for our nation to recognise First Nations people in our constitution". Dr Reid said.
"Our First Nations have been a part of the land for over 60,000 years and altering our constitution to reflect this is an important step in our country's reconciliation journey."
The parliamentary group will regularly meet during sitting weeks in Canberra and discuss strategy for the implementation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
"It is important that this campaign has cross-party political support," Dr Reid said.
Dr Reid's "nan", Aunty Robyn Reid was there for the launch and for the 15th Anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations by Prime Minister Mr Kevin Rudd in 2008.
"The Apology by the Rudd Labor Government was a momentous occasion," he said.
"It marked the beginning of truth-telling in this country.
"The anniversary is a moment for us to again come together to acknowledge our past, reflect, and look towards a more reconciled future with our First Peoples."
