Memorial garden for dolphin receives a refresh

A Woy Woy memorial garden honouring the life of Elusive the dolphin has received refreshing landscaping works.

The lone dolphin was seen around the Brisbane Water from 2013 to 2015.

She was much loved by the boaters and residents alike who enjoyed watching it in the Brisbane Water, according to Mr Daniel Rond, a ferry master with Central Coast Ferries.

Mr Rond, who was the person who launched the community fundraiser to have the garden first installed, has now paid for the restorative works to undertaken out of his own pocket.

The memorial garden contains an engraved plaque and memorial stone honouring Elusive was unveiled in 2017 in Anderson Park.

The plaque and stone now sit in a privately-owned garden bed outside of the Ela Mesa Greek Restaurant.

Mr Rond raised the $2000 needed purchase the plaque and memorial stone and associated labour to install the garden.

At that time, professional landscaper Mr Scott Porter was contracted to create the garden and Mr Rond again used Mr Porter's skills to refresh the space this year.

Mr Rond spoke to the Peninsula News about the death of Elusive and its effect on the community in March 2017 when preparations to install the garden were being finalised.

According to Mr Rond, the lone bottle-nosed dolphin touched many members of the Peninsula community and her untimely death in 2015 after becoming entangled in an anchor line at Empire Bay was a huge blow to the community.

"More than 300 people donated to have the memorial garden installed and hundreds turned up for the unveiling," he said.

remember Elusive, our Brisbane Water dolphin," Mr Rond said.
