Grant to compete in Greece

Woy Woy resident Mr Troy Chapman has received a $1000 scholarship to compete in the Shotokan Karate International Federation World Championships held in Greece in July.

The grant comes from the Central Coast Regional Organisation of Councils, a joint initiative of Gosford City and Wyong Shire Councils to promote sporting and cultural achievements.

The 28-year-old has been selected to compete at the World Championships in the under 75kg weight class, having competed at state, national and international levels over the last three years in the same weight category.

A black-belt fighter, Mr Chapman has being doing karate for 11 years and practices up to 18 hours a week.

He trains in Budgewoi with fellow competitor Mr Darren Brayley, while also travelling to Sydney for training and competitions.

According to Mr Chapman, the sport is all about setting your own goals and working hard to achieve them.

"Karate is great whatever your ability level," Mr Chapman said.

"I love how competitive the sport is, how you depend on yourself to get results.

"The sport also allows you to build relationships with other athletes and coaches, which will endure even after your career is over.

"The support from the Central Coast Regional Organisation of Councils is excellent, I wasn't expecting it but it certainly makes things easier, with going to the championships."

Mr Chapman said his trip to Greece to compete would not be his only achievement this year as he is expecting his first child this month.
