Heather is Citizen of the Year

Woy Woy community identity Heather McKenzie has been presented with the 2004 Citizen of the Year Award for her ongoing work over the years for the Woy Woy Peninsula community.

Gosford Council's Australia Day Community Awards were presented at a special ceremony at Mt Penang Parklands on Friday, January 16.

Gosford mayor Cr Robert Bell said that Ms McKenzie had been, and continued to be, a strong campaigner for issues such as the environment, public transport, medical services, nursing home accommodation and youth issues.

She had also been a dedicated volunteer for St Vincent de Paul, South Woy Woy Progress Association, Royal Blind Society, PCYC and a tireless worker for Australia Day celebrations in Woy Woy, he said.

Announcing the award, town crier Mr Stephen Clarke said that the Woy Woy Peninsula community recognised Heather's contributions to the area over many years.

"She's a passionate campaigner for issues such as the environment, public transport, medical services, nursing home accommodation and youth issues," he said.

"Heather is also involved with the Older Women's Network, Woy Woy Environment Centre, Gosford Sister City Committee and Coastlink Respite Care.

"Never one to slow down, her community involvement is outstanding," he said.

Another Peninsula resident, Janice Rose was also recognised for her service to Seniors.

Mr Clarke said that Janice Rose was a valued volunteer at Ettalong Baptist Church Adult Day Care.

"Jan was involved in setting up this service in 1975 and has continued to volunteer since then.

"She is committed to the care of the frail, aged and disabled people on the Peninsula.

"She is now coordinator of Ettalong Baptist Church and organises functions and activities for her clients, making them feel loved, valued and cared for.

"Seniors are provided a hot lunch at the centre and take part in activities such as bingo and singalongs.

"Adult Day Care Centres with the support and care of the Ettalong Baptist Church and other community organisations enable clients to remain in their own home," he said.
