An Ode to the Wall

We basked within the sunlight

We ate within its warmth

We felt its kiss upon our faces

As we stood at our back door

Then we heard the rumbling

The tearing, growling noise

Of machinery in action

They were ripping up next door

They flattened and they pounded

They formed and then they poured

They set a concrete footing

Then built a massive concrete wall

Now we stand here in the shadows

We shiver in the cold

We can no longer kiss the sunlight

Since the lawyers built their wall.
