College students take VET awards

Brisbane Water Secondary College students scooped the pool at the Central Coast Vocational Education and Training (VET) Awards at Mingara on September 20, according to senior campus principal Mr David Beattie.

"Competing against more than 2500 students representing 20 high schools and TAFE campuses across the Coast, Brisbane Water college students showed outstanding skills, excellence in the classroom and workplace learning." Mr Beattie said.

Successful students included Andrew Hurl, who was Student of the Year in information Technology (VET), Chris Richardson Student of the Year in entertainment industries (VET), Amy Monk Student of the Year in retail (VET) and Sally Beer Student of the Year in a community enterprise project.

Other students were nominated in various subject areas, including Michael Drake and Tom Miller in construction and Justin Steward in information technology.

Andrew Hurl and Amy Monk were also nominees in the school-based Trainee of the Year category.

Mr Beattie said: "The awards are now in their 10th year and recognise the outstanding achievements by students and their teachers in the vocational subjects.

"The beauty of these courses is that students can achieve their HSC as well as gain many skills and abilities which will get them jobs in the workplace."

The awards were coordinated by Youth Connections and also recognised the work of businesses and employers across the Central Coast.

Woy Woy Little Theatre was winner of the Entertainment Employer of the Year.
