Awareness session about automated defibrillators
Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club will hold an awareness session about automated external defibrillators in its upstairs clubrooms from 9am to10am on Sunday, October 22.
The session follows on from a similar session held on Monday, September 24.
The "In a Heartbeat" session is free of charge, said the club's advanced resuscitation facilitator Mr Richard Grimmond.
"It provides information to boost the confidence of anyone in the community to locate and use an automated external defibrillator should a cardiac arrest emergency arise," he said.
"The trend towards providing public access defibrillators in the community will mean greater access to them.
"Over 8500 people experience an out of hospital cardiac arrest in NSW every year," he said.
Only 12 per cent survived, according to NSW Health statistics.
"Using resuscitation and defibrillation can improve the survival rate to around 70 per cent, so it is vitally important for us as a community to feel confident in locating and using these life saving devices.
"The main objectives are to explain how they work, where to find one and how to use one in a cardiac arrest emergency."
He said that, inside an hour, those attending will see demonstrations on adult and infant manikins to reinforce the information provided about using defibrillators in emergencies.
