Tree group calls for submissions on State design policy
The Grow Urban Shade Trees group has joined calls for Peninsula residents to make a submission on a proposed State Environmental Planning Policy about "design and place".
"Why not make a submission to remind state government planners just how vital urban shade is?" group member Ms Melissa Chandler suggested.
She said that planning controls should be strengthened to prevent tree removal by private certifiers and to greatly increase urban canopy.
They should require people who performed site analysis and risk assessment to be educated about the urban heat island and about the economic and health risks of not providing canopy.
She said planning for higher density housing targets should should ensure adequate space for shade trees.
Ms Chandler said the State policy would be an "overarching document which informs the rules and controls for planning and development, including for urban trees".
The proposed policy was open for submissions until April 28.
