Film screening for Ugandan women

The Rotary Club of Woy Woy recently screened a film to raise money for the Pure Joy Women Empowerment Uganda initiative.

The clubs hosted a screening of the movie Palm Beach at Cinema Paradiso on August 15, with more than 100 guests raising $1540 on the night.

The funds will be allocated to the Pure Joy Uganda Hair Salon project, a venture designed to provide training and education in hairdressing to Ugandan women facing poverty.

Project manager Ms Joan Redmond said the salon project would hopefully lead to employment for women who participate.

"This will provide training for women to give them a better chance of finding employment and help lift them out of poverty.

"The salon will also generate income for the whole project.

"Pure Joy began in 2016, offering free sewing tuition for local women.

"However, not every woman has the ability or desire to sew and in 2017 they asked if Pure Joy could teach hairdressing and beauty and that day is almost here.

"The Pure Joy salon is being set up in an adjacent building and will hopefully be up and running before the end of the year.

"In time, the salon will offer hairdressing service for both women and men and will expand to include beauty."
