Under-19s miss out on rugby union premiership

Woy Woy's Under-19's Rugby Union squad have been unsuccessful in their bid to be crowned the Under-19 Premiers.

Woy Woy unfortunately stumbled at the final hurdle, going down seven points to 23 in the Under 19's grand final against Avoca Beach.

The Under-19's grand final was an intense, spirited contest held at Woy Woy Oval on Saturday, September 15, according to Central Coast Rugby Union's football officer Mr Larry Thomson.

"It was certainly an intense first half but as the game progressed Avoca Beach gradually took control of the match," Mr Thomson said.

"Avoca Beach had jumped to a 10 points to nil lead at the halftime break and everything appeared to be going their way.

"Woy Woy did respond with their own converted try early in the second half and suddenly things grew more tense with the score 10 to 7 in favour of Avoca Beach.

"However, the further the match went on, the more momentum the visitors gained," Mr Thomson said.

Avoca Beach were able to post 13 points in the final 20 minutes of the second half and this was enough to secure the Under 19's Premiership.

"Woy Woy never stopped trying and they were best served by lock Ben Austine, and centre Tamani McInnes-Cama.

"Woy Woy may be hanging up their boots for the season but they should be proud of their efforts this year given how hard each and every team fought to secure the place in the finals," Mr Thomson said.
