Young, black and ready

A Young, Black and Ready for School program was held at St Andrew's Anglican Church of Umina on Tuesday, November 22.

The program has previously been run by the Benevolent Society, who did not get enough funding to run it on the Peninsula this year.

Koorana Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group president Ms Bobbi Murray said she didn't think families on the Peninsula should miss out "so we pulled together as a community".

"I pleaded my case to many local organisations and across the Central Coast," said Ms Murray.

"We had many organisations give donations in the way of providing the drink bottles, bags for parents and kids and items that would go into the bags to give the kids a great start to their Kindergarten year.

"The day was full of fun and games and children had their health screening done.

"Children and parents were presented with their bags (parent packs for parents and caregivers) certificates and a new school hat from their school," said Ms Murray.

The day consisted of face painting, games, storytelling, hand print paintings and performances by Brisbane Water Secondary College Didge and Dance group who stayed to teach the younger children songs and traditional dances.
