LETS holds trade day

Central Coast LETS will hold a trade day on June 13 at the Woy Woy Environment Centre.

The trade day is a monthly event organised by the Central Coast Local Exchange Trading System (LETS), a group which has been running on the Central Coast for more than three years.

The day allows people to trade goods and services with other local people using an alternative local currency, known as Shells, rather than money, according to publicity officer Ms Caroline Bohlsen.

The group currently has more than 300 members and aimed to develop social networks.

Ms Bohlsen said the trading system that inspired the group was first established in 1983 by Michael Linton of British Colombia.

She said the system expanded into other countries where different groups adapt to its area's needs and wants.

"Members provide services to other members which can include anything from fixing a fence to baking a cake or walking the dog," Ms Bohlsen said.

"Also, goods can include items such as children's toys and clothing.

"Central Coast LETS also has businesses involved, ranging from printers, counsellors and training organisations.

"Members are given a 1000 debit and credit-limit of our local currency, called Shells, and can begin trading straight away."

Ms Bohlsen said trading can take place with other members anytime and not just on allocated trade days.

"Cash is limited in supply and when I need something, it is not always when I have the money for it," Ms Bohlsen said.

"With the local trading system, if I see something I need or want I can just buy it with my Shells, and if that puts my account into debit then I just work or trade to earn more Shells.

"I find that it is also a great way to meet lovely people and expand my social circle.

"The fact that we have a community care fund also means that members can also help others in need either individually, such as gardening for someone not able to, or collectively, such as collecting clothes or furniture for someone in need."

Members and newcomers are encouraged at set up their items from 9.30am prior to the meeting at 10am.

Trading will commence from 11am to 1pm.

For those not wanting to attend the meeting, a 10.30am set-up time has been allocated.
