College to become sustainable

Brisbane Water Secondary College will continue the involvement of its Umina campus in the pilot of The Sustainable Schools Program.

This program recognises that environmental education is the responsibility of the whole school community and it works towards empowering individuals to care for the earth's natural systems.

The school is about start a recycling scheme where used office paper and cardboard will be collected and taken to the recycling facility "Earthcare" to be turned into such things as newspaper, egg cartons, greeting cards and other paper products.

The school newsletter reports that the college also hopes in the future to start collecting recyclable containers such as glass and PET bottles and aluminium and steel cans.

The school has received a Certificate from the Department of Environment and Conservation for their actions and progress towards sustainability.

They were also nominated in 2003 for their commitment to managing their school in a more sustainable fashion.

Interested teachers, school staff, parents and students are welcome to be involved.
