Support unit helps clean Hardys Bay
A support unit from Brisbane Water Secondary College's Woy Woy campus helped remove litter from the foreshores of Hardys Bay on Friday, November 29.
Light rain delayed the commencement of the activity, with the oyster barge being cancelled due to the conditions.
Plenty of small litter, such as bottles and bags, was present on the tidal mark beside Hardys Bay Rd.
This litter became much thicker at Rocky Point and into Rileys Bay.
The small picnic spot had stacked litter in broken bags, which had been left there by members of the public.
This litter had been spread, possibly by native animals.
Three large full bags were retrieved from this site, with old chairs also collected.
Many larger items were found in this 100m section, including four car tyres, seven oyster traps and baskets, a large blue plastic drum, deck chairs and carpet dragged from the mud.
Incoming rain and thunder storms ceased work, and all the litter collected was loaded on to the trailer.
Car tyres were transported to Rob Moxhams for cleaning and recycling.
Excluding the tyres, 280kg of rubbish collected was weighed in at Woy Woy Tip.
Brisbane Waters Foreshore Program co-ordinator Mr Graham Johnston said the day saw a positive response from locals who were willing to get involved.
Mr Johnston did, however, say there was still plenty of litter remaining in Rileys Bay.
